Woman suffers gunshot to head

Bayfield-area resident critical, but stable in Denver

A Bayfield-area woman was flown to St. Anthony Hospital and Medical Campus in Lakewood after suffering a gunshot wound to her head shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday near county roads 501 and 502, north of Bayfield.

Sharon Burnette, director of communications for St. Anthony, said Stacy Pazell, 43, of Bayfield, was in critical and stable condition as of Sunday evening.

Criminal Investigator Lt. Ed Phippen with La Plata County Sheriff’s Office said a 911 call came in from an individual who had been flagged down by a David Pazell, 45, of 2000 County Road 501. Pazell said that his wife had shot herself.

“It’s an area near an old gravel pit and a turn-around, an unincorporated and residential area,” Phippen said.

Upper Pine Fire Protection District and Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived and found David Pazell and his wife, who was bleeding from her head, near a black 2006 Ford Explorer registered to the both of them.

“Law enforcement found him at the vehicle, and she was on the ground,” Phippen said. “A handgun was located near the victim.”

Stacy Pazell was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center, and then to St. Anthony’s, Phippen said.

“The couple, according to David Pazell, were at the Lake House Bar and Grill (17460, County Road 501) for a pool tournament, and I think they were there most of the day,” Phippen said.

Phippen said David Pazell is cooperating with authorities. Sheriff’s Office investigators are continuing to process the scene for evidence.

Anyone with information regarding the couple is asked to contact La Plata County Sheriff Office Investigator Brandon Dyer at 382-7054.
