Skyhawk softball swept

Saturday’s split was a bit of a disappointment for the Fort Lewis College softball team.

The Skyhawks would have been more than happy with that result Sunday in Alamosa.

While the hits came in Saturday’s doubleheader at Adams State, the FLC bats went mostly quiet Sunday as the Grizzlies defeated the struggling Skyhawks (12-19, 10-10 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) 8-4 and then 8-0 in five innings. Adams State (13-15, 11-11 RMAC) also blanked FLC in Saturday’s second game.

“Things didn’t go our way today (Sunday),” head coach Kira Zeiter said. “Sometimes that is the way softball goes – your hits don’t fall and it feels like you have to work extra hard for everything you get. This week we need to work extra hard to make things fall our way.”

In Sunday’s opening game, Adams State got the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Fort Lewis answered with four runs in the second inning. Unfortunately, that would be all the offense the Skyhawks could muster Sunday.

In the FLC second, leadoff batter Tristen Gilbert drew a walk, and with two outs and Gilbert on third base and Lauren Caldwell on first, Denae Fisher hit a single to left field to score Gilbert. Myndee Thompson plated two more runs with a double to left-center, scoring Fisher and Caldwell. Kaitlyn Bending also scored on the play after reaching third base and scoring on a Grizzlies throwing error.

Thompson, Jeovanna Rios, Mandy Owens, Caldwell and Fisher accounted for the five Skyhawks hits.

Victoria Johnson pitched six innings for FLC and struck out two, allowing five earned runs on six hits.

In the series finale, the Skyhawks managed only four hits in five innings as the Grizzlies put FLC down in order in three of the five innings. Caldwell had two of the Skyhawks’ hits, with Owens and Kiley Raica adding a hit apiece.

Raica started the game in the circle, pitching the first two outs before being relieved by Olivia Goldberg. Raica allowed five earned runs on five hits. Goldberg surrendered three runs on nine hits.

Fort Lewis will return home to Aspen Field on Friday and Saturday for a four-game series against Metro State.
