Gunshot victim from Bayfield area dead

An autopsy will be conducted this week

The Bayfield-area woman who suffered a gunshot wound to the head late Saturday has died, the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

An autopsy will be conducted Tuesday or Wednesday, said sheriff’s spokesman Dan Bender.

Stacy Pazell was found with her husband, David, near a black 2006 Ford Explorer on Saturday evening near the intersection of county roads 501 and 502, north of Bayfield. David Pazell told investigators that his wife had shot herself.

A handgun was found near Stacy Pazell.

The couple had been at the Lake House Bar & Grill, 17460 County Road 501 for a pool tournament, David Pazell told officers.

The sheriff’s office had responded to a 911 call from an individual who had been flagged down by David Pazell, 45.

Stacy Pazell was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center on Saturday night and then flown to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood.

She was in critical but stable condition Saturday night. But St. Anthony declined to release further information Sunday or Monday, citing privacy regulations.

Anyone who has interacted with the Pazells or has information about the incident is asked to call sheriff’s investigator Brandon Dyer at 382-7054.
