Ignacio girls basketball rakes in San Juan league awards

The present and future look bright for the Ignacio High School girls basketball team.

Senior Sky Cotton and freshman Hilda Garcia were selected to the girls All-San Juan League first team.

Garcia paced the Bobcats, scoring 13.9 points per game and grabbing a team-high 4.7 rebounds per game.

Cotton scored 9.5 per game with 3.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

“It really goes to show that their hard work was paid off by their peers and other coaches of the league seeing that they did well,” IHS head coach Shane Seibel said. “It really means a lot to the school, the community and to our basketball program that we’re trying to build.”

Junior Ellie Seibel was named honorable mention All-SJL.

Her father, IHS head coach Shane Seibel, was selected as a Co-Coach of the Year with Norwood’s Greg King.

“To be recognized by my peers says a lot about the kids,” coach Seibel said. “They were very coachable and they were willing to come into the season with open ears. They made my job easier.”

Norwood senior Jordan Williams took home the girls SJL Player of the Year after scoring 20 points per game and grabbing 9.7 rebounds per game.

Cotton will graduate this season, but both Garcia and Ellie Seibel will return next year.

“I hope it continues to bring a little hunger,” coach Seibel said. “They understand to get through that next level, get through regionals, it’s done in the summertime.”
