Durango High School boys lacrosse beats Pueblo West in Alamosa

DHS boys lacrosse wins in Alamosa

Playing Pueblo West is becoming an annual tradition for the Durango High School boys lacrosse team. So is beating the Cyclones.

The two teams clashed for the third consecutive season Wednesday, but the game had a new location: Adams State University in Alamosa.

After meeting each other half way, the Demons (4-2, 1-2 Mountain League) picked up their third consecutive win against the Cyclones (0-3), this time a 12-8 victory. “We’ve beat these guys every time in pretty good games,” DHS head coach John Robinette said. “It was nice to get out there and play, and we’re looking to keep it as an annual thing. We talked to the Adams State coach, who came out and watched the guys, and it would be nice to get maybe even a few more teams involved. Another Mountain League team like us and another Pikes Peak conference team.”

In Wednesday’s installment, sophomore attacker Jake Beekman led the Demons with four goals. Trevor Gabbard, a senior, had three goals and two assists, and Jack Marshall and Kyle Robinette each added two goals, with Robinette tacking on an assist and a team-high eight groundballs.

Senior Hunter Hall played in his first game of the season after coming back from wrestling, and he had one goal and one assist while winning five faceoffs.

DHS took a 3-2 lead after one quarter and a 7-4 advantage at the half. The Demons outshot the Cyclones 26-16.

“They came back a bit on us, but kept our poise and scored goals,” coach Robinette said. “We’re very pleased with where we are right now for the season.”

The Demons will return to Mountain League action Friday at Glenwood Springs (2-1, 1-1) before a Saturday game at Vail Mountain (3-2, 2-2).
