Hardy stands alone on all-league team for Bayfield basketball

Wolverines’ Hardy garners first-team all-league honors
Preston Hardy made enough of an impact on the Intermountain League in his senior season to receive an all-conference nod. He’ll continue his basketball career at Colorado Christian.

Not even a flu that kept him off the court for chunks of the 2014-15 season could keep Bayfield senior Preston Hardy off the all-conference team.

The Wolverines’ center was their lone representative on the All-Intermountain League first team.

He missed four of Bayfield’s 26 games because of a flu virus that struck at the start of the league season, and he took a couple weeks after that to return to form.

Hardy, a Colorado Christian signee, still averaged a team-high 10.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.

“I think (the coaches) recognized his effort and still what he did do,” BHS head coach Jeff Lehnus said. “Even when he was sick as a dog, he was playing some excellent man-to-man defense. Even when he wasn’t scoring offensively, he was contributing with defense and rebounding.”

The selection also can be looked on as a career achievement for Hardy. He played on Bayfield’s varsity squad all four years of his career.

The Wolverines had two other players average nearly 10 points per game, but Lehnus believes where BHS finished in the IML standings limited their representation on the all-league squad.

BHS went 1-7 in the IML before rallying in the postseason all the way to the state tournament’s Great Eight.

“That’s an unfortunate thing that depends on your philosophy,” Lehnus said. “We’re the sixth-place team in (Class 3A) and we only have one person on the all-league team.”
