Foul play not suspected in shooting death

Pazell

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that no foul play is suspected in the March 28 shooting that resulted in the death of La Plata County resident Stacy Pazell.

Last weekend, Pazell, 43, suffered a gunshot wound to her head “near the intersection of La Plata county roads 502 and 501. A handgun was found near her,” a news release Friday afternoon from the Sheriff’s Office said. “Her husband, 46-year-old David Pazell, was present during the occurrence.”

David Pazell flagged down someone who called 911, authorities said. When investigators arrived, David Pazell told police his wife had shot herself.

Earlier that evening, the couple had been at the Lake House Bar & Grill, 17460 County Road 501, for a pool tournament, David Pazell told officers.

Emergency workers initially took Stacy Pazell to Mercy Regional Medical Center after the shooting about 9 p.m. March 28. Then she was flown to St. Anthony Hospital, in the Denver area, where she was in critical-but-stable condition that night. She died Sunday night.

“An autopsy was performed Tuesday. While the results of toxicology reports are still pending, the Sheriff’s Office investigation does not indicate any criminal activity related to the incident,” said the release.

In an obituary, family members said, “Stacy was a loving mother and a devoted wife. Stacy adored her children and was a passionate supporter of their many social and athletic activities.”
