Durango girls lacrosse digs past Telluride 16-1

DHS girls lacrosse returns to play

The Durango High School girls lacrosse team was itching to get on the field.

After playing only one game all season leading up to Friday’s match in Telluride, the Demons made the most of their time on the field in a 16-1 victory.

“It’s really nice to have a 2-0 record now going into our game with Aspen on Friday,” DHS head coach Katie deButts said. “That is going to be a bit of a step up and more of a challenge, but I think we’re ready for it.”

DHS (2-0, 1-0 Mountain League) dominated start to finish. Sophomore Hannah Looman scored five goals, and senior Payton Randle added another three. Senior Shaelee Hawkins scored two goals for the Demons and Chloe Bourdon, Kim Crawford, Chamisa Edd and Megan Pope all added goals.

“Crawford, a defenseman, had an exciting goal,” deButts said. “She ran it all the way up and got a free-position shot on goal and scored it.”

DHS started sophomore Dyno Shilaikis in goal, and she made one save. Rachel Piccoli, another sophomore, played the second half in goal and made four saves.

Telluride fell to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in league games.

DHS will test itself against a strong Aspen team (4-1, 2-1 Mountain League) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
