A free Sunday at Purgatory

The bonus weekend is “a small thank you to the community,” said Purgatory owner James Coleman, seen skiing last month.

First, a new lift; now, free skiing.

What’s next for Purgatory Resort?

The area announced Tuesday afternoon that it will hand out free lift tickets Sunday, the final day the resort will be open for the 2014-15 season.

Just last week, Purgatory revealed that it will tear down Lift 8 over the summer and replace it with a high-speed detachable quad chairlift. The area is touting the new lift as part of its celebration next season of Purgatory’s 50th anniversary. The resort opened in December 1965.

The area closed daily operations last Sunday but will reopen this Saturday and Sunday for a final fling.

Skiers and snowboarders must pick up a free lift ticket at the Purgatory ticket office Sunday before loading the lift.

On Saturday, lift tickets will be two for $50. All Purgatory season passes, including weekday-only passes, will be valid on closing weekend.

“This bonus ski weekend is a small thank you to the community for being part of Purgatory’s story,” said James Coleman, managing partner of Purgatory Resort. “It will be a fantastic weekend to ride Lift 8 one last time and have some fun on Dante’s Deck with your friends.”
