Lineup wheel continues to spin for Durango girls tennis

DHS tennis forced to shift lineup in loss to Grand Junction

Shifting lineups have affected the Durango High School girls tennis team all season.

Saturday against Grand Junction at home was no different.

The Demons lost 5-2 to the Tigers with six players moving up one position and three alternates because of the absence of their normal No. 1 singles player.

“We had to move people up because of the CHSAA rule if someone misses two matches, your lineup has to change,” DHS head coach Dave Weisfeldt said.

Maggie Hackett lost 6-0, 6-1 to Grand Junction’s Carolena Campos playing at No. 1 singles. Kit Hackett, her older sister, lost 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 10-6 to Mckenna Brooks at No. 2 singles.

“She just got off to a slow start. She made that second set real competitive to force a tiebreaker and ran out of match,” Weisfeldt said. “Too bad she can’t play professional men’s tennis and play three out of five sets.”

No. 3 singles player Hannah Libermann fell 6-0, 6-0 to Sarah Megan Erb.

Durango’s No. 1 doubles team of Skylar Barr and Audrey Morris lost 6-4, 6-3 to Jessi Smith and Isabel Manzanares. Hailee Prichard and Jenna Engelken lost 7-5, 7-5 to Alissa Belcastro and Peyton Staats at No. 2 doubles.

The Demons finally found some traction in their lower doubles teams. Their No. 3 doubles squad of Rheagan Kaufmann and Emily West beat Bree Call and Caylin Boardwine 6-1, 6-4, and the No. 4 doubles team of Ruby DeCora and Jasmine Herrera won 6-4, 7-5 against Joselle Jacobs and Lily Huang.

“We’ve got depth, so I’m happy about that,” Weisfeldt said.

The Demons will face even more lineup attrition for their next match, a dual against Aspen in Delta on Thursday as a prelude to Delta’s tournament. That weekend is prom for DHS, so the Demons will be without all of their juniors and seniors.

“We’ll have a much different lineup, a lot of alternates in again,” Weisfeldt said. “After that, we’re closing out the regular season. We better get everyone back in and playing, that’s all I can say.”
