League-leading Colorado Mesa completed a weekend sweep of the Fort Lewis College softball team Sunday afternoon, winning 8-5 and 10-2 in Grand Junction.

The loss drops the Skyhawks to 13-26 overall and 11-17 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. CMU, which took over first place in the league after two wins over FLC on Saturday, improves to 29-16 overall and 25-6 in the RMAC.

“It was a tough-fought weekend,” head coach Kira Zeiter said. “It is never a good feeling to get swept, but we will take the positive things and work on the things we struggled on for the pod next week. We have big games the next two weeks.”

In the first game Sunday, the Skyhawks trailed 4-1 in the fifth inning before Jeovanna Rios hit a grand slam to give the Skyhawks a 5-4 lead. The Mavericks regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth after scoring three runs and added one more run in the sixth to seal the win.

Missy Fundora and Myndee Thompson accounted for four of the Skyhawks’ nine hits. Rios scored two runs, with Fundora, Thompson and Lauren Caldwell each scoring one.

Victoria Johnson struck out two batters and allowed six runs on seven hits in the first 4 2/3 innings. Olivia Goldberg finished the game in the circle, allowing two runs on three hits.

In the series finale, the Skyhawks scored both of their runs in the third inning. Fundora, Thompson and Rios each hit doubles in the inning. Thompson’s double scored Fundora and Rios’ double scored Thompson.

Kiley Raica pitched the entire second game, surrendering seven earned runs on 16 hits and fanning four batters.

The Skyhawks will play their final road games of the regular season when they face UC-Colorado Springs and Colorado School of Mines in pod play action at UCCS on Saturday and Sunday.
