Three principals to leave District 9-R

Durango High’s theater directors also departing

Four principals within Durango School District 9-R will be leaving their posts at the end of the school year, the district announced Monday.

Animas Valley Elementary principal, Lisa Schuba; Escalante Middle School Principal, Tim Arnold; Shared Schooling Principal Tam Smith will be leaving the district. Fort Lewis Mesa Principal John Marchino will be taking Smith’s position.

Schuba will be moving to Boulder to take a new position after seven years with Durango’s public schools.

“I am very proud to have served as an instructional aide, certified teacher, teacher-union negotiator and building principal during my tenure with the district,” Schuba said in a statement.

Needham Elementary School Assistant Principal, Michol Brammer, will be taking Schuba’s place in the fall. She previously worked at Animas Valley Elementary as a fourth-grade teacher an instructional coach.

Escalante Middle School also will be going through a leadership transition, but Arnold’s replacement has not been announced.

After working with for the district for 25 years, Arnold is retiring at end of the semester.

“Working closely with so many students, families and colleagues over the years has provided me with many incredible and rewarding experiences that I will always treasure,” Arnold said in a statement.

Arnold worked as an instructional aide, teacher, coach, athletic director and assistant principal

Shared Schooling, the program that serves the home-schooling community, also will have a fresh face at the helm.

Smith, the current principal is leaving to take a position in education overseas.

After six years at Fort Lewis Mesa, Marchino will be taking over as Principal on Special Assignment serving Shared School.

“I have truly enjoyed working with the families and students in the community,” Marchino said in a statement “The school ... will always have a special place in my heart.”

A replacement for Marchino has not been selected yet.

The district also announced Monday, the main theater staff at Durango High School – technical director, Walker White and the theatrical director Kristin Winchester White – will be leaving.

White has accepted a prestigious position as technical director for the University of North Carolina School of the Arts master’s program.

“The duo has built upon an incredible theater program at DHS, one that any theater connoisseur would envy,” said Durango High School Principal Leanne Garcia. “We are positive that a myriad of interested talent would love to take over this successful program and work with our amazing students.
