FLC makes push to reach its supporters

Fundraising efforts touted before trustees; thousands of money raised
Fort Lewis College Foundation is connecting with core supporters in an effort to raise annual donations.

Fort Lewis College is reaching out methodically for the first time in years to the core of supporters who back the school with their morale and their money.

Mark Jastorff, the new vice president for advancement and executive director of the Fort Lewis College Foundation, brought FLC trustees up to date at their meeting Friday.

The results of the campaign are impressive, Jastorff said. The number of supporters contacted, including alumni, is up as are total giving and annual donations – gifts of $10,000 or less. The total-donations tally doesn’t include pledges or in-kind gifts.

It was high time to build an aggressive outreach campaign, said campus spokesman Mitch Davis.

“We haven’t done nearly enough of this for years,” Davis said. “Mark is doing a great job of catching us up.”

Among statistics cited by Jastorff:

Annual gifts – $10,000 or less – from July 1, 2013, to the end of February 2014 totaled $541,000. In the July 1, 2014, to Feb. 28, 2015, period, the total was $640,000.

The annual gifts are separated by category. Gifts for scholarships rose from $186,179 to $211,426; contributions to athletics fell from $97,824 to $84,137; donations to capital funds rose from $13,950 to $23,844; gifts to specific departments jumped from $58,777 to $115,853.

Total giving to the college, excluding in-kind gifts and pledges, in the current fiscal year (as of Feb. 28) was $1,547,829. At the same point last year, the college had received $1,184.378.

As for stakeholders, 57 percent of trustees have given to the college; 77 percent of Fort Lewis College Foundation board members have donated; 92 percent of the president’s cabinet members have given; and 99 percent of faculty and staff have made gifts.

The number of total constituents contacted by Jastorff’s team rose from 53,655 in July 2014 to 56,143 in January 2015. The number of alumni contacted increased from 22,543 to 23,936 in the same period.

Jastoff is assisted by a gift officer in Denver and two in Durango.
