213 Fire now is 100 percent clear

Firefighters extinguish all hot spots
Authorities reported Wednesday evening that the 213 Fire is 100 percent contained. The fire began Sunday near Mile Marker 4 of La Posta Road (County Road 213).

The 213 Fire, smoldering south of Durango, is 100 percent contained, Southern Ute fire officials said Wednesday night.

The fire area was estimated to be 60 acres. Firefighters worked until midnight Tuesday to extinguish hot spots, said Sarah Jacobson, public information officer for the 213 Fire.

“Firefighters worked hard (Wednesday) to put out all the hot spots and finish securing fire lines on the perimeter for areas on both sides of the Animas River,” she said.

On Wednesday, staffing on the fire was down to 42 personnel, reduced from 130 on Tuesday, she said. The Durango Interagency Type III Management Team supported the Bureau of Indian Affairs Southern Ute Agency, which led efforts on the 213 Fire because it was burning on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation.

No homes were damaged by the fire, and a pre-evacuation notice was lifted. No injuries were reported.

The fire started about 4 p.m. Sunday on the west bank, near the 4000 block of La Posta Road (County Road 213).

All roads near the fire are open, but drivers are asked to drive with caution because of firefighters working in the area.

Incident commander Rich Gustafson planned to release firefighters Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

The Southern Ute agency will continue patrolling the fire area daily, Jacobson said.

The fire’s cause remains under investigation.
