The message from the Durango High School boys lacrosse team all week: Send the seniors off with a win. They made sure of it themselves.
The Demons blasted Montrose 15-3 on Friday at home to close out their home schedule.
Tanner Smith scored a minute-and-a-half into the game on an assist from Trevor Gabbard – a senior connection.
“The seniors got us started,” DHS head coach John Robinette said.
Gabbard finished with five goals and four assists, and fellow seniors Oaken Oles scored three times and Jackson Steigelman twice. Sophomore Kyle Robinette helped DHS (5-4, 2-4 Mountain League) out with one goal and four assists.
The Demons raced out to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter. They outshot Montrose (1-9, 0-7 ML) 43-10.
Senior Hunter Hall controlled the face-off circle, winning 10-of-15, and grabbed eight ground balls.
DHS will close out ML play at Telluride on Tuesday. The Demons then will travel to a Class 5A school Friday to play Palmer and will face one of the top 4A teams Saturday in Air Academy.
“It’s a busy week next week,” coach Robinette said.
