Slew of Western Slope athletic activities canceled or postponed

For the second time this season, a game between Bayfield and Salida girls soccer had to be canceled.

The two teams were scheduled to play March 7 during the first week of the season, but cold weather and snow forced the teams to postpone the game until Friday. But that game had to be canceled, too, because Salida was unable to make the drive over the mountain passes to reach Bayfield.

Inclement weather caused cancellations and postponements around the state, and La Plata County teams were no exception.

The Delta Invitational tennis tournament was scrapped out of travel concerns for visiting teams, including the Durango High School girls tennis team.

DHS head coach Dave Weisfeldt had planned on taking a younger squad to Delta with it being prom weekend in Durango, but the entire team got a weekend off as a result.

“I feel bad for the young girls who were going to get some time on the court, but their time will come,” Weisfeldt said.

The Ignacio High School girls’ soccer team also had its game at Telluride rescheduled. That game will be made up at 4 p.m. May 1. The Bobcats still are scheduled to host Ridgway at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Planning on inclement weather on the Front Range, the Fort Lewis College softball Saturday doubleheader in Colorado Springs has been pushed back two hours each game. FLC now will play Colorado Mines at 2 p.m. and UC-Colorado Springs at 4 p.m.
