Fort Lewis softball game with UCCS suspended

FLC edges Mines in opener before postponement of 2nd game against UC-Colorado Springs

Rain was just about the only thing that could have cooled off Myndee Thompson’s bat Saturday in Colorado Springs.

The Fort Lewis College softball sophomore hit two home runs and had three runs batted in to give FLC a 4-3 lead over UC-Colorado Springs before rain halted the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Mountain Lions had runners on second and third base with two outs when the rain hit.

Both teams will resume the game at noon Sunday with Dani Fonseca batting with a 3-0 count against FLC pitcher Kiley Raica.

UC-Colorado Springs trailed 4-2 going into the bottom of the seventh before Rayle Glover scored on a wild pitch after pinch running for Makenna Smith, who singled.

Mandy Owens drove in FLC’s other run with a solo home run of her own.

In Game 1 of the pod play, FLC (14-26, 12-17 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) broke a six-game losing streak by beating Colorado Mines 7-6.

The Skyhawks scored four runs in the top of the first inning to Mines’ 3, and that proved crucial.

Both teams scored three runs over the final six innings, giving FLC a slim win.

Tristen Gilbert and Owens both drove in two runs for the Skyhawks, and Missy Fundora and Thompson had two hits.

Victoria Started in the circle for FLC. She allowed six runs, three earned, on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out three.

Olivia Goldberg relieved her in the bottom of the sixth inning, entering the game with the bases loaded.

She only allowed one run before getting a strikeout and a popout to end the inning.

With the postponement, FLC will finish Saturday’s game against UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday after playing the Mountain Lions at 10 a.m. in a new game and before they face Mines again.
