Schroder slams Fruita Monument past Durango baseball

Fruita Monument had the Durango Demons’ number this year. The Demons aren’t alone.

The Wildcats’ baseball team improved to 17-0 and 8-0 in the Southwestern League with a 14-6 win at Durango High School on Saturday.

Fruita Monument started with a blast, literally, as Cuba Bess belted a grand slam in the top of the first inning.

The Wildcats added another run in the top of the season when Grant Stagg scored, and a Gabe Treider single to center field in the third scored Bess to make it 6-0 before the Demons made a pitching change, relieving Hayden Sill with Andrew Selser.

Fruita Monument was on the board again in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Sam Schroder belted a two-run homer to make it 8-0.

DHS (5-10, 1-6 SWL) answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of a few Fruita Monument mistakes in the field.

The Wildcats’ lead stretched to 9-2 in the top of the sixth, as a Dylan Row triple plated Sam Graf.

DHS added a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-3, but a double off the bat of Jake Basinger in the top of the seventh brought Stagg home for a 10-3 lead, ushering in another new pitcher for the Demons in Jordan McKnight.

That’s when emotions boiled over for the slumping Demons, as catcher Zach Szura was ejected from the game for yelling an expletive.

Schroder made it even worse on the Demons, launching his second homer of the game, this a three-run jack, to put the Wildcats up 14-3 going into the bottom of the seventh.

DHS hit a homer of its own, as Lawrence Mayberry went deep to lead off the seventh. The Demons tacked on two more runs on a Dayne Rowley triple but couldn’t climb any further back from the big hole.

Rowley was 2-for-3 with a double to go with his triple. Casey Dunlap was 3-for-4 at the plate for DHS.

“We had chances to make it a tighter game earlier on, but we couldn’t get the hits when we had runners on,” DHS head coach Eric Baker said.

The Demons will host Montezuma-Cortez at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. The Demons’ lone SWL win this season came against Montezuma-Cortez in a 12-1 game April 14.

DHS will wear gold jerseys for the game, as the team will play to benefit childhood cancer research.
