Injured mountain biker helped along Colorado Trail

La Plata County Search and Rescue deployed teams to the Colorado Trail toward an area known as High Point in response to a 911 call that came in about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

County Director of Emergency Preparedness Butch Knowlton said communication was lost with the reporting party after the call came in.

“We decided to go ahead and respond and get some personnel up there, just in case we (did) have something serious, so we could be that much closer, that much quicker.”

According scanner transmissions, a 47-year-old man suffered hip injuries while mountain biking, and search-and-rescue personnel had located him. Sunday afternoon, they were transporting him to an area where emergency responders would meet them.

Knowlton said mountain-bike teams are commonly used in hasty responses in terrain difficult to navigate.

“That’s usually how we get people in, so they can make better time and get in there with a radio; then we can staff up as we need,” he said.

Emergency medical response was en route to treat the biker by 4:15 p.m. Sunday.

High Point is about 7.5 miles up the Colorado Trail from the Dry Fork trailhead off County Road 208.
