Customer slashed in ATM robbery

Police search for suspect who fled in a Prius
A man who was getting money from an ATM about 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Bank of the San Juans, 144 E. Eighth St., was robbed and stabbed in the chin by another man who fled in a Toyota Prius, according to responding police officers at the scene. The victim was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center.

A customer using an ATM at Bank of the San Juans in downtown Durango was attacked from behind by a robber wielding a knife Tuesday evening.

The customer was shoved in the back, then slashed on his face, said Detective Burke Baldwin of the Durango Police Department. The victim was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center with a facial wound.

Durango police are searching for the suspect, who fled eastbound in a white Toyota Prius from the bank at 144 E. Eighth St. The suspect was wearing a mask, sunglasses, hooded sweatshirt and gloves, Baldwin said.

“We’re really hopeful somebody in the community will either identify this person or know something about what happened,” he said.

The robbery was reported at 5 p.m. The suspect escaped with an undetermined amount of cash, Baldwin said.

Art Chase, president of Bank of the San Juans, declined to comment after the robbery. The local bank is a division of Glacier Bancorp Inc.

Baldwin asked anyone with information about the robbery to call him directly at 375-4734.
