2 Durango teams make it to state coding finals

Tech teams put their apps to test for $25,000 contracts

Two Durango teams have made the finals of Go Code Colorado.

Ten of the 31 teams that entered were named finalists. Of those, three teams will win $25,000 contracts to continue developing their projects.

Go Code Colorado aims to make data collected by the state government more available and helpful for businesses. The second annual competition is backed by the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office and corporate sponsors.

“It is incredible to see this level of creativity and collaboration,” Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams said Tuesday in a news release. “The business community came together to put forth challenges faced in its daily business operations. App developers and entrepreneurs answered the call. I’m excited to see how all the apps submitted eventually benefit consumers.”

The two Durango teams that made the cut are CoCo, composed of Elliot Hutchins, Kira L. Smith, Tyler Cook and Kimball Hutchins; and Purgatouring, which is Derek Abt, Lindsey Philopois, Steven K. Armour and Emily Shirtz.

This weekend, the finalists will be in Boulder for Mentor Weekend, meant to polish their apps and hone their business ideas.

The teams will submit their final coding for review in mid-May. On May 21, the teams will present to a panel of five judges, along with business leaders and government officials. The judges then will rule on which teams are awarded contracts.
