Wildfire starts on Missionary Ridge

Lightning sparks fire north of town

A lightning strike sparked a small wildfire on Missionary Ridge.

The fire is burning on about a quarter-acre within the burn scar caused by the 2002 Missionary Ridge Fire. The fire is on the cliffs above East Animas Road (County Road 250), south of Haflin Canyon. Smoke was visible Wednesday from U.S. Highway 550 and East Animas Road.

A 10-person firefighting crew from the Columbine Ranger District hiked in to assess the fire, said Ann Bond, a Forest Service spokeswoman.

The fire was reported at 12:59 p.m. Wednesday by a member of the public. It has been named the Rappel Fire.

The fire comes only a week after firefighters contained the 213 Fire, which burned 60 acres south of Durango. Fire season is off to an early start because of dry and windy conditions.
