Police search for ATM attacker

Condition of unidentified victim remains unknown

What kind of bank robber drives a Prius?

Durango police are searching for a masked attacker who slashed an ATM customer outside Bank of the San Juans, 144 E. Eighth St., at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Police say the knife-wielding attacker drove off in a white Toyota Prius, the eco-conscious hybrid car.

“We don’t have any reason at this point to believe that it was stolen,” Detective Burke Baldwin said of the getaway vehicle.

The attacker made off with an unspecified amount of cash.

“An unidentified subject pushed (the customer) from behind, stabbed him in the chin, took the money that he’d just gotten out of the ATM, and fled eastbound in a white Toyota Prius,” Baldwin said.

The victim was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center with a facial wound. Baldwin said Wednesday he could not release the man’s name or his condition.

The attack was particularly brazen, occurring in the heart of downtown Durango during busy daylight hours. The bank branch at 144 E. Eighth St. only is two blocks from Durango Police Department headquarters.
