Police describe ATM robbery suspect

Tall, dark-skinned man sought in attack
Suspect

Durango police Thursday released a physical description of the suspect who attacked an ATM user two days ago.

The suspect is believed to be 6 feet 3 inches tall or taller and to have a dark-skin complexion. The description is based on witness statements and still photos from the ATM’s camera, the Durango Police Department said in a news release.

The attack was reported at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Bank of the San Juans, 144 E. Eighth St. in downtown Durango.

Police said the robbery suspect stabbed the ATM user in the chin and took money the victim had withdrawn before fleeing in a white Toyota Prius. Witnesses told police the Prius had New Mexico license plates, said Lt. Ray Shupe, a Durango police spokesman.

The victim was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center to treat the stab wound. He received stitches, but the wound was minor and not life-threatening, Shupe said.

Citing the ongoing investigation, police have declined to release other details, including the victim’s name and the amount of money taken.

Police have made no arrests in the case.

Detectives are “working some leads they’ve gotten from tips that have come in,” Shupe said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Detective Burke Baldwin at 375-4734.
