Day 1 at the Aztec B&B Invitational

More qualify for Saturday’s finals

Throwers put out the Durango High School track and field team’s best performances at Day 1 of the B&B Invitational on Friday in Aztec.

Breann Hawman won the girls shot put at 36 feet, 3.5 inches and Chandler Schneider took eighth in the boys discus throw at 124-04.

Those were the Demons’ only top-10 finishes in final events, but Brett Rowland qualified seventh in the girls 100- and 300-meter hurdles, finishing in 18.32 seconds and 52.13 seconds, respectively.

Corbin Lyman was ninth in the boys 300-meter hurdles preliminary round in 43.86 seconds.

Bayfield High School

The Wolverines finished the meet’s opening day with two champions.

Jessic Cusick won the girls 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 24.12 seconds, and Conner Kennedy won the boys long jump at 20-2.5.

Katie Hawkins finished second in the girls pole vault at 8-07 and Aubry Brown finished second in the boys discus throw at 149-07.

Kennedy was fourth in the boys high jump, clearing 5-8 in the finals, and Bridget Goddard finished fourth in the 800 in 2:36.27.

Morgan Allred was sixth in the girls pole vault at 7-09. Carl Heide, Cash Snooks and Dawson Heide all tied for seventh at 5-04.

In the preliminaries, Jessie Roukema qualified 10th in the girls 100-meter dash in 13.86 seconds.

Maddy Foutz was seventh in the girls 200-meter dash at 28.66 seconds heading into finals.

Brian Mashak took seventh in the boys 100-meter dash prelims at 11.87 seconds and was fourth in the 200 prelims in 23.32 seconds.

Gabe Kaufmann was fourth in the boys 400-meter dash preliminaries.

Brady Fields finished fifth and Carl Heide sixth in the 110-meter hurdles at 16.79 and 16.94, respectively.

The pair also qualified sixth (Fields) and 10th (Heide) in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.34 and 43.70 seconds.

Ignacio High School

Kyle Bailey won the boys high jump at 6 feet in a jump-off over Farington’s Chayton Salcido.

Chrystianne Valdez finished seventh in the girls pole vault at 7-09 after Bayfield’s Allred bested her in a jump-off.

Azala Perez and Mike Perez both qualified 11th in the 100-meter dash, with Azale finishing in 13.91 seconds and Mike in 12.04.

Mike Perez also was fourth in the boys 400-meter dash preliminaries in 53.62 seconds.
