Police release name of shooting victim

Details in Tuesday incident are sketchy
Sgt. Bobby Taylor, left, with the Durango Police Department, and EMS supervisor Dave Fiddler with the Durango Fire Protection District talk to a man on Tuesday evening at the Exxon at East Animas Road (County Road 250) and Florida Road after a shooting took place in the Riverbend neighborhood north of 32nd Street. A 19-year-old man was shot in the hip, and the party stopped at the gas station to call 911.

Durango police identified the 19-year-old man shot in the hip Tuesday as Benjamin Jacob Keil.

It was too early to talk about motive, suspects or circumstances, police Lt. Ray Shupe said Wednesday.

“There were multiple witnesses,” Shupe said. “So I have detectives running all over all day.”

The shooting occurred about 7 p.m. in the Riverbend neighborhood north of 32nd Street, Shupe said.

“A bullet was recovered at the scene and has been sent for analysis,” Shupe said.

Two groups of people were involved in the incident, Shupe said.

But he wouldn’t expand on what relationship might exist between them.

“We’re really in the early stages of the investigation,” Shupe said.
