FLC softball falls short in bid for playoffs

Needing two wins to have a chance to make the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament for the fourth consecutive season, the Fort Lewis College softball team fell short Sunday afternoon against Colorado State University-Pueblo, losing 12-5 and 10-0 (five innings).

The games were played at Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield, New Mexico, because of heavy rains in Durango.

Two Skyhawk seniors played their last games for the softball program – Kaitlyn Bending and Myndee Thompson.

“We want to thank our two seniors for their dedication to the program the last four years,” head coach Kira Zeiter said. “They have brought so much to Fort Lewis softball, and we thank them and will miss them greatly.”

FLC needed two wins Sunday to have a chance at the playoffs, but got off to a bad start, trailing 8-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning in Game 1. The Skyhawks scored two runs to cut the ThunderWolves lead to 8-2. Mandy Owens reached base on a fielder’s choice and scored Thompson from third base. Lauren Caldwell then batted in Jeovanna Rios for the second run.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Missy Fundora hit a home run to right field, her third of the season. Rios added the Skyhawks’ second home run of the game to lead off the fifth inning.

Trailing 12-4 in the final inning, Rios hit a single to left center to bring home Rosthenhausler for the final margin.

Fort Lewis tallied 11 hits off Kelli Henry. Rios led the team with three hits and Fundora and Thompson each added two hits. Rios went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored.

Starting in the circle for the Skyhawks was Victoria Johnson, who surrendered eight runs on six hits in 3-2/3 innings of work. Olivia Goldberg finished the game, allowing three earned runs on five hits.

In Game 2, the ThunderWolves run-ruled Fort Lewis 10-0 in five innings. FLC was held to four hits and the winners scored 10 runs on just seven hits.

Fort Lewis finished the 2015 season 16-31 overall and 14-22 in league games.
