La Plata Electric Association sends election packages without ballots

Issue confined to District 4 customers

An unknown amount of La Plata Electric Association ballot packages in District 4 went out Friday lacking one important item: an actual ballot.

“They have the secrecy sleeve and the return envelope. They just don’t have a ballot,” said LPEA spokeswoman Indiana Reed.

The ballots were mailed Friday, and most people received them Monday, and that’s when the electric co-op began receiving calls from customers who didn’t receive a ballot in their packet.

Customers in District 4, which comprises the north and east part of La Plata County, who didn’t get a ballot are asked to LPEA at 247-5786, and LPEA will mail them a new ballot.

Karen Barger and Heather Erb are vying for the District 4 seat.

If it turns out more than a few subdivisions are missing ballots, Reed said the printer may have to mail new ballot packages to all of District 4.

Mail-in ballots are due to the La Plata County clerk and recorder on May 15, or customers can hand-deliver the ballots to the co-op’s annual meeting that begins with registration at 9 a.m. May 16 at Pagosa Spring High School. Ballots must be cast before the official meeting begins at 10:30 a.m.

“We don’t think it’s all the ballots (in District 4) because we’ve heard from some people who got ballots,” Reed said.

Ballots for all other districts appear to be fine, Reed said.

In total, LPEA mailed 32,000 ballots on Friday, Reed said. Seven thousand ballots went to District 4.

Other candidates besides Erb and Barger in District 4, are:

Bob Formwalt and Nicholas “Koli” Kazarinoff in District 1, Archuleta County.

Gregg Dubit and Kohler McInnis in District 2, in south and west La Plata County.

Jim Wotkyns and Britt Bassett in District 3, the city of Durango.
