Devo bike swap is Saturday

Durango Devo will unveil a new van at this weekend’s swap, which will join the old van, seen here, in the Devo fleet. Proceeds from raffle tickets will help pay for expenses for the new van.

Durango Devo’s annual bike swap will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Chapman Hill Ice Rink.

The swap will feature hundreds of bicycle-related items, including equipment and clothing from Durango pros Todd Wells, Ned Overend, Shonny Vanlandingham, Howard Grotts, Travis Brown, Kristin McGrath, Rotem Ishay and others.

Durango Devo, a nonprofit that coaches local youths in riding and racing bikes, will get 20 percent of all sales during the fundraising swap. Devo has 400 youths ages 2-19 registered this season, said Devo director Amy Haggart.

Donations of $1 are welcome at the door. For $5, you can enter a raffle that offers several prizes, including a Trek Stache 9 mountain bike. Door prizes also will be awarded during the swap for those entering the raffle. The raffle will continue until Iron Horse Bicycle Classic weekend.

Money from the raffle will go toward the costs of preparing a new van donated by Purgatory Resort, Haggart said. Those costs are estimated at $12,000, and the van will be worth about $60,000 by the time it hits the road, she said.

With the growth of the program and shuttling kids to rides and races, “We need two vans,” Haggart said.

Swap details:

Drop-off will run from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday. Numerous volunteers will be on hand to help.

The swap will run for 12 hours Saturday. Commonly sold items are: road bikes, mountain bikes, kids bikes, cruisers, shocks, wheels, components, bike shoes, pedals, helmets, pumps, bike packs, jerseys, tools, bike racks and anything that gets pulled behind a bike.

Pick-up is 9 a.m.-noon Sunday. Items not picked up will be considered donations to Durango Devo.

The swap currently is Devo’s only fundraiser.
