Durango track wins Southwestern League girls title

Demons finish second in boys meet to Fruita Monument

Demons jumped for joy – and gold – at the Southwestern League Championships track meet Friday in Grand Junction.

Of Durango High School’s 11 event titles, five were for jumps.

Those results gave the Demons the girls team title with 154.5 points over Fruita Monument with 126.4.

The Wildcats edged DHS for the boys title, though, with 129 points to Durango’s 118.

Alli Davis cleared 5 feet to win the girls high jump, and Gabe Gilleland won the boys high jump at 6-03.

DHS also swept both pole vault victories with Justin Marcum taking the boys’ title at 14-00 and Jessica Lee winning the girls’ at 8-01.

Josh Hobson cleared 42-02.75 to win the boys triple jump.

Breann Hawman threw the shot put 35-11 to finish first.

Shannon Maloney and Abby Scott were the Demons’ only individual champions in running events.

Maloney won the girls 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 28.33 seconds, and Abby Scott took first in the girls 1,600-meter run in 5:41.08.

DHS also won three relay championships.

The girls 4-800-meter relay team of Emily Fogel, Aubree Lorenzen, Maloney and Scott finished in 10:11.89, more than a minute ahead of second place.

The Demons also took the title in the boys 4x8, with William Chandler, Joe Logan, Seamus Millett and David Moenning getting the win.

Davis, Miranda Gallegos, Teagan Garand and Maloney won the girls 4x200-meter relay in 1:48.33.

The Demons will return to Grand Junction next weekend in their final meet before state.
