Bus-service test begins in Vallecito

The first of three trial bus runs to see if enough interest and need exists among senior citizens in Vallecito to offer transportation to Durango is scheduled to start this month.

The Vallecito Service League and the La Plata County Senior Center will run a 13-passenger bus from Vallecito Church to Durango on May 28, June 25 and July 23 to gauge interest, said Sheila Casey, executive director of the senior center.

“We want to support the needs of all seniors,” Casey said Monday. “We’re going to determine if there is demand.”

The bus, which is wheelchair accessible, would leave Vallecito Church no later than 9:30 a.m. The bus would leave individuals for appointments or run errands or take riders to the senior center for lunch or other activities. A doctor’s appointment, for example, has to be scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to accommodate the bus schedule. The return trip would leave Durango no later than 3 p.m. Seniors must be at least 60 years old.

Riders must fill out an application and make a reservation with Liz at 759-6309 at least two days before the departure. A $15 donation is suggested to help cover expenses.
