Snow to stay north of Durango; town to get graupel

Wednesday was cloudy, but lacked snowfall as of 11:30 a.m. near Purgatory Resort on U.S. Highway 550. To view more webcams around the region, visit http://thecloudscout.com.

The gathering clouds are an indication of an approaching storm, but it won’t leave much in the way of moisture in Durango, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Grand Junction said Wednesday.

The most Durango will see Thursday is graupel, ice pellets, Ellen Heffernan said. The snow is reserved for elevations of 9,000 to 10,000 feet and higher, she said.

Heffernan estimated the chance of rain in Durango at 20 percent.

High temperatures around Durango on Thursday will be in the mid- to upper 50s, Heffernan said. The low Thursday night will be in the high 20s to freezing.

The storm, approaching from the west-northwest, will produce about the same results Friday, she said.

Clearing will start Saturday, and Sunday will be sunny, the weather map shows. The next possible moisture could come March 18.

The high temperature Sunday will be around 59, and the high Monday about 62.
