Erb, Bassett and Dubit are forward-thinkers and the right choices for LPEA election

The first 75 days of 2015, Costa Rica ran its entire nation on renewable energy with electricity prices set to tumble between 7 percent and 15 percent in April. Costa Rica generates most of its power with hydroelectric plants, geothermal, some wind and solar and uses fossil fuel only as a backup. Costa Rica has set a goal to become carbon neutral by 2021.

Denmark, United Kingdom, Germany, Scotland and Ireland all have set records for renewable-energy production in 2014, relying mostly on wind and some solar.

The United States also has been increasing its use of renewable energy, thanks to the actions of many forward-thinking individuals located throughout the United States.

We are lucky to have three such forward-looking individuals here in La Plata County seeking election to the LPEA board. Heather Erb and Britt Bassett are two current LPEA board members seeking re-election, and Gregg Dubit is seeking to be elected for the first time to the LPEA board. All three candidates have the professional energy expertise and business knowledge to lead us in the renewable-energy present.

Heather, Britt and Gregg are dedicated to keeping our energy cooperative under local control, and they all embrace the renewable-energy values touted by our local community. They all favor developing local energy independence by encouraging local energy projects, keeping energy dollars local.

All three believe renewable-energy development starts with taking advantage of the great gift of solar energy that blankets our area.

Stone Age energy policy based on the extraction of dirty fossil fuels lacks vision and knowledge of the alternative-energy revolution.

It is time to modernize our ideas on energy, and this starts with renewables and localized energy production.

Heather, Britt and Gregg have the necessary forward vision and experience to take the LPEA board into the present future. For the sake of our present and future generations, vote Heather, Britt and Gregg.
