Shootout qualifying continues

The weather forecasters hopefully are right on with their upcoming weekend predictions, and we should have excellent conditions for the Express Employment Professionals Best Ball and Scramble on Saturday and Sunday at Hillcrest Golf Club.

This is the second qualifying event for the shootout at the end of the season, and there is $500 in added prize purse for this weekend’s activities.

Entry fee is $50 per person, and you can choose your own partner, provided the handicap differential is no greater than eight strokes (except for championship flight).

Tee times begin at 8 a.m. both days, and scoring will be gross and net.

I saw Shelly Hartney a few days ago, and it reminded me of the upcoming Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence fundraising tournament, which will be contested May 15 at Dalton Ranch Golf Club.

Shelly’s husband, Tom, who left us way too soon, was a rallying force behind the development of this annual event.

Not sure if there still are any openings; call DRGC at 247-8774 for more information.

When I first put fingers to typewriter (yes, I am a fossil) back in the early 1980s, one of the driving forces to perpetuate the sport of golf was the junior golf program and properly learning the game at an early age.

The mentoring of young golfers was one of the highest priorities of then Hillcrest professional Jim Fiala and his wife, Marilyn.

This tradition continues.

The Hillcrest Junior Golf Foundation and the Hillcrest Golf Club and pro shop usher in the 2015 Junior Golf Program with registration at 1 p.m. May 16.

The program, which provides clubs and necessary materials for clinics from June 8-11 for just $20, also includes prizes, awards and refreshments on the final day.

So juniors ages 6-17, tug on your parents to let you learn to play the game of golf and the etiquette it demands.

It did not take long, approximately 90 minutes May 1, to completely fill this year’s Columbine Classic Duet at Dalton Ranch.

This year’s beneficiaries are the Dogster’s Spay and Neuter Program, the Fort Lewis College women’s golf team and the Durango High School girls golf team.

The Columbine committee also has decided funds donated to the FLC women’s program will be for a Nick Turner scholarship in memory of his long-term contributions to the Classic and his relationship with Fort Lewis College.

The popular Spring Four Ball is scheduled May 16-17 at Dalton Ranch.

The field is limited to the first 80 entrants, and tee times begin at 9 a.m. both days. Call 247-8774 to sign up or for more information.

And don’t forget the 16th annual Bank of the San Juans Golf Tournament on June 12 at Dalton Ranch.

The beneficiary for this year’s charity event will be the Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado.

To get involved, as a player or hole sponsor, call Mike Smedley at BSJ at 426-7128 or Briggen Wrinkle of Community Foundation at 375-5807.
