Cheyenne Mountain Indians sink hatchet into Durango boys lacrosse season

DHS boys lacrosse eliminated from the state tournament by No. 3 Cheyenne Mountain

The season didn’t end the way the Durango Demons wanted it to, but it ended where they wanted it to.

The Durango High School boys lacrosse team reached the CHSAA Class 4A state tournament for a second consecutive year but lost in the first round on both occasions.

This year’s Demons fell 20-2 on Wednesday at Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs.

“That team is legit,” DHS head coach John Robinette said of the now 14-2 Cheyenne Mountain Indians. “They had great depth, great shooters, and we had no answers. We’d focus on one dude, and the next guy would step up.”

Ten different Indians scored for Cheyenne Mountain in the game.

Army Feffer led the team with five goals, while Mitch Paige and August Johnson both scored four.

After going down 2-0 early, the Demons (8-7) got within 4-2 in the first quarter, before the Indians scored a goal with 2 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Trevor Gabbard, a senior who attends Bayfield High School, scored first with an assist from sophomore Kyle Robinette.

Gabbard finished with a team-high 33 goals on the season, while Kyle Robinette finished with a Demons-high 19 assists.

Sophomore Jackson Steigelman scored the Demons’ second goal, which was unassisted.

“They blanked us from there. They played a real high-pressure zone that foiled a lot of the offense we depend on,” coach Robinette said.

DHS went into halftime down 12-2.

Hank Muir made six saves in goal while allowing 14 goals, and Andrew Brown made four saves and allowed six goals.

Hunter Hall was 8-of-16 on faceoffs for Durango.

DHS started the season 0-2 and regrouped late to win key games that sent them to the state tournament, including an 11-7 win against Vail Mountain last Friday in a Mountain League Crossover game.

Robinette said his team would hang their hats on those wins more than the 20-2 loss that ended the season.

“This team played with resiliency, class and pride all year long. They kept coming,” coach Robinette said. “We had a heart-to-heart after the game, and I know this season meant a lot to these guys, especially the seniors. They’ll have memories of their four years of Durango lacrosse for the rest of their lives.”

After making the state tournament two years in a row, Robinette knows the group of eight seniors laid a foundation for future success of the program.

“It’s a good experience, obviously, to be in the playoffs. We know we want to get there, but we want to make noise while we’re there,” coach Robinette said. “To make it two years in a row is a huge feat for us. Next season will start as soon as we get back to town and pop the film in to see what happened and how we can get better.”
