Weather washes out CHSAA state tennis, creates backup baseball plans

Contingency plans in place for baseball

Kit Hackett and sisters Chloe and Emily West will have another weekend to ponder their first-round matches of the state tournament.

The Colorado High School Activities Association announced Wednesday the Class 4A state girls tennis tournament at Pueblo City Park would be postponed from its scheduled start Thursday until next Monday. Rain is in the forecast for the entire state through Sunday, with several events around the state already being pushed back.

“This is not something we arrived at lightly, as there is much that goes into planning this tournament, both on our side of things, and from the schools’ perspective,” CHSAA assistant commissioner Bethany Brookens said in a news release. “After careful consideration much of this week, we decided this was the right move.”

The state tennis tournament now will go Monday through Wednesday, weather permitting.

The goal is to get the entire tournament in during a three-day stretch so traveling teams don’t have to commute back-and-forth to the host site.

“We don’t want teams to have to travel twice,” Brookens said. “It is possible we would have been able to complete one round on Thursday, but then the teams would have been sitting around for two days, waiting for the rain to pass. With the change, it is our hope that teams will only have to travel once.”

Contingency plans also were put into place for this weekend’s district baseball tournaments. There is an 80 percent chance of rain for much of the state forecasted for Saturday.

All of 2A baseball activities have been postponed until a seeding committee can select the field next Wednesday. If 3A-5A games are rained out Saturday, games can be played Sunday, Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Both Bayfield High School and Durango High School are slated to host district baseball tournaments Saturday.

Though postponing games until next week could cause conflicts with school schedules, CHSAA felt it was in the best interest of everybody to move the tennis tournament and have plans in place for the baseball games.

“We understand and know there are other commitments scheduled for next week, such as IB and AP testing” Brookens said. “Unfortunately, the reality is that even if we started play on Thursday, we would be forced to finish the tournament next week because of the rain due this weekend. We wanted to be proactive and we apologize that we have to move these dates.”
