Fort Lewis cycling team sees mixed results at USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships

Riding as a team, the Fort Lewis College cyclists shared some success on the first day of road nationals.

The men’s and women’s Division I USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships road races were held Friday in Asheville, North Carolina, with 10 Skyhawks hitting the course.

FLC’s men’s team was led by Zack Noonan, Nathan Seaford and Max Thilen, who all crossed the finish line in 3 hours, 4 minutes and 35 seconds. Noonan officially placed 20th, Seaford 22nd and Thilen 23rd. Right behind them one second later was Ian McPherson, who finished 36th.

Ryan Standish added a 42nd-place finish in 3:09.29. Dean Haas was unable to finish and did not place.

The men’s winner was Connor Brown of Lindenwood University, as he crossed in 3:00.13. Lindenwood also had the third-place finisher with David Lobardo, who finished in 3:03.44.

The silver medal went to Derek Schanze of the University of Florida. He crossed in 3:00.14.

FLC’s women’s team was led by Sofia Gomez-Villafañe and Maddie Chaves, who both finished the women’s course in 2:25.36. Gomez-Villafañe was 26th overall, and Chaves finished 32nd.

Sydney Edmonson crossed 48th overall in 2:33.57, and Casey Hynes was 49th in 2:33.58.

Gretchen Stumhofer of UC-San Diego was first in 2:20.06. Laurel Rathbun of Marian University by way of Monument was second in 2:20.38. Lenore Pipes of Cornell University was the bronze finisher in 2:20.38.

Action will continue Saturday with the criterium race, with the time trial scheduled for Sunday.

FLC is seeking its 22nd national title as a team this weekend.
