Durango youth takes second place in pentathlon

Seamus Millett, a standout cross country runner at Durango High School, took second place in the the men’s youth division in the international pentathlon competition held over the weekend at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

The pentathlon drew athletes from South and Central America and the United States.

Millett, 16, who will be a senior at DHS in the fall, also took the gold medal in the mixed relays. His partner was Naomi Ross from Denver.

The pentathlon involves fencing, swimming, running/shooting and horseback riding. Competitors younger than 18 years old don’t participate in equestrian events.

Millet’s next stop is the national championship competition scheduled June 21-24 at the Olympic Training Center.

If he should place in the national competition, Millet could qualify for the world pentathlon championships to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in September.
