Downtown Durango is looking shabby

As a 49-year area resident, I am appalled by the state of Durango Downtown.

The sidewalks are filthy and storefronts don’t seem much better shape. It seems available benches and doorways are occupied by street people and beggars looking for some sort of handout. They certainly will not refrain from accosting any passer-by. The aroma of marijuana is pervasive. Dogs abound (at least they are on leashes), owners seem incapable of going anywhere without them but haven’t seemed to master the location of the leash and dog in respect to others using the same sidewalk.

Rudeness on the shared sidewalks is not limited to dog owners. It seems that most people feel they have the right of way no matter what the situation.

We really enjoy a number of restaurants in Durango, and their interiors are great. We would just hope to see the downtown area return to a higher state of cleanliness and order.
