Humane Society has strong financial footing

The so-called “financial disaster” and comparison to the Powerhouse Science Center Edith Balceris and Wendy Ludgewait alluded to in their inflammatory letter (Herald, May 19) is not only misguided and misinformed but wholly inaccurate.

The La Plata County Humane Society is held as an example of excellence throughout the state and nation, and will continue to thrive financially and in our ability to serve the animals and people of this community. LPCHS has a very strong financial position that is reviewed monthly by the board of directors (which includes a CPA and an accountant), our accounting firm and yearly by an independent auditor.

The financial statement in 2014 shows LPCHS maintains assets (including our land and buildings) of $3.6 million and liabilities of $107,464. Total revenue, (which includes the profitable operation of our Thrift Store, generous community donations, business support, city and county animal services contracts) in 2014 exceeded $2.2 million with expenses of $1.9 million. This put us in a better financial position in 2014 than anytime in previous years 2010-2013.

The reasons for this positive position includes a reduction in operational expenses, improved operations and a reduction of seven full-time positions due to improved and well-defined job descriptions. Our consolidated operations through March 2015 are $20,000 higher in income compared with 2014 in income and flat in expenses.

Our board is a highly talented and skilled group of dedicated volunteers that fully serves the organization and its mission. The board has approved realistic budgets across the organization so that the Humane Society can continually provide the best possible care for the animals, which is the only mission that the organization focuses on every day. As a nonprofit, LPCHS files a publicly available 990 Form annually, which is the Internal Revenue Service income-tax federal form and shows its financial stability and long-term viability. LPCHS’s 2014 financial report is sound, and its mission is laser-focused. Please, review it at www.lpchumanesociety.org/flipbook.
