DHS grads get $2M in awards

Durango High School graduating seniors, 42 of them, will continue their higher education supported by more than $2 million in scholarships and awards.

Among the honors:

Luke Fowler received a National Merit Scholarship that will provide him $7,500 a year for four years at the school of his choice. He chose St. Olaf College, a private liberal arts college in Northfield, Minnesota.

Vayle Townsend received scholarships worth $2,000 from Basin Electric Power Cooperative and the United Methodist Thrift Shop, He also was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award for countless hours of service to organizations involved in trail building and programs for the homeless and needy children.

Nolan Reed, an outstanding violinist, has qualified for $172,000 over four years. He received the President’s Gold Scholarship and music scholarships. He plans to attend Baylor University.

Shaylah Wood and Mallory Byrd each received $28,000 over four years from La Plata Electric Association. Wood is going to the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Byrd is headed for Dartmouth College.

Emma Buchanan and ‘Ilima Umbhau each were awarded $1,250 through A Durango Education Foundation Award for Excellence. Buchanan will attend Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and Umbhau is going to the University of Colorado, Boulder.
