Boulder is blocking Missionary Ridge Road

Forest Service to send crews when it can

Missionary Ridge Road will remain closed past its usual opening date of June 1 because a large boulder is blocking the road, a San Juan National Forest official said Thursday.

The boulder is about a half-mile past a closure gate that is about 7½ miles up Missionary Ridge Road, or Forest Service Road 682, said Don Kelly, trails foreman with the Columbine Ranger District.

Kelly said the district is in the process of getting a crew to go up to the site and move the boulder “as soon as we can.”

He said that at this point it’s not safe for a vehicle to pass around the boulder.

Missionary Ridge Road is accessed off East Animas Road (County Road 250) north of Durango.

It climbs up the ridge for more than 20 miles until it dead ends, not far from the Weminuche Wilderness.

For more information contact the Columbine district office at 884-2512.
