Tami Graham and the Millwood Junction restaurant present singer-songwriter Cheryl Wheeler in concert at 8 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $18 and are available at Southwest Sound in Durango, the Millwood Junction in Mancos and Rocky Mountain One-Stop in Cortez. Cheryl Wheeler’s songwriting has led some observers to speculate that there may really be two Cheryl Wheelers. But the singer is really just one person, and she’ll make a long-awaited return to Southwest Colorado on Sunday night with a concert at the Millwood Junction in Mancos.

A Maryland native, Wheeler’s career includes 12 albums and a songwriting knack that’s been noticed by a slew of industry bigwigs including Garth Brooks, Juice Newton, Bette Midler and Peter, Paul & Mary, all of whom have recorded songs she’s penned.

The schizophrenic description of Wheeler is in deference to her abilities as a poet and a comedian, two personalities she merges into most of her compositions with a traditional folk music sound. A third description is also appropriate; that of the social critic, as she’s perfectly comfortable satirizing anything from Prozac to parenthood.

Wheeler, who is a regular on the folk music festival circuit, is coming to Mancos after coming close to the Four Corners earlier this summer when she performed at the Thirsty Ear Festival in Santa Fe. She’s also played at Rockygrass in Lyons on several occasions, but she hasn’t been in this corner of the state since a 2004 show at the Strater Hotel.
