Southwest Colorado Outdoor Recreation Report

Article Last Updated; Friday, September 11, 2009  12:23AM
The San Juan Region Outdoor Recreation Hotline (247-8187):

Fire danger is low in the San Juan region. Montezuma County has a fire ban in effect.

Archery hunting season is in effect Aug. 29-Sept. 27. Muzzle loading season is Sept. 12-20.

Campgrounds on the San Juan Public Lands are open. Remember, it is prohibited to camp on national forest lands for more than 28 days within a continuous 60-day period (except in a developed campsite that allows a longer stay).

Most San Juan Public Lands roads are open. Do not damage roads or drive off roads in west areas. East Fork Road is closed to vehicles wider than 50 inches. For road status reports, visit www. fs.fed.us/r2san juan/conditions/ or call 247-4874.

Off-highway vehicles, ATVs and motorcycles must have Colorado State registrations for use on public lands in Colorado. Registrations are available through Colorado State Parks, most off-highway vehicle dealers, the San Juan Public Lands Center, Bayfield Ranger District, Pagosa Ranger District and the Dolores Public Lands Office.

Trail conditions vary throughout the region. Weminuche Wilderness-Flint Creek Trail is heavily affected by deadfall and not recommended for stock. The Elk Creek Trail is impassable to stock.

Search and rescue cards are recommended before any outing. The Colorado Outdoor Recreation Search and Rescue (CORSAR) card is available at local public lands offices. Individuals automatically are covered for search and rescue efforts with the purchase of a Colorado license for fish or game.

If you have any questions regarding conditions on San Juan National Forest or BLM lands, call 247-4874, check out the Web site at www.fs.fed.us/r2/sanjuan, or stop by the San Juan Public Lands Center in the Durango Tech Center. The facility is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
