Dr. J. Wendell Christophe, the clinic's only dentist, left in late January. A temporary replacement recently was brought in to take over his caseload and see patients three days a week, every other week.
"We're going to try to see what we can do to get caught up on patients that we were treating while he was still there," said Antoinette Ramirez, dental clinic manager for the Alamosa-based provider, on Thursday.
She said several applicants have been interviewed for the opening.
"We're actively looking," Ramirez said.
The position will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is selected, she said.
In March 2007, thousands of patients were left without primary care after Valley-Wide closed its health clinic here.
La Plata County, the city of Durango and Mercy Regional Medical Center stepped in to open a stopgap clinic at the old Mercy Medical Center site on East Third Avenue.
An advisory council is still seeking a permanent solution to the shortage.
