DENVER – The head of the state health department will take over the top post in Gov. Bill Ritter’s Department of Natural Resources.
Jim Martin, currently chief of the Department of Public Health and Environment, will take over from Harris Sherman, who left for a senior U.S. Department of Agriculture position.
The U.S. Senate confirmed Sherman to his post earlier this month.
Sherman and Martin worked in tandem to lobby for new environmental rules for the gas and oil industry. After the Legislature passed bills that led to the new rules, Martin and Sherman both took seats on the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, the state agency that approves drilling permits.
Before joining the Ritter administration in 2007, Martin was executive director of Western Resource Advocates, an environmental group based in Boulder.
“His leadership style is one of consensus-building and problem-solving, and he has broad respect among stakeholders and a great record of public service,” Ritter said in a news release.
The Department of Natural Resources includes the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, state parks, the Division of Wildlife, the Water Conservation Board, mining regulators and the state water engineer.

It is good to know that the DNR chief will consider water to be a resource to be preserved and protected instead of a public toxic waste dump.
