The petition, called Honor 23 "Put Kids First," asks lawmakers to honor the will of state voters by ensuring the 1.9 percent funding hold-back from last spring be released to school districts statewide in January 2010.
The withheld funds amount to $627,000 for Durango 9-R, according to a news release issued Monday by the school district.
A forum will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11 in the 9-R Board Room in the Administration Building, 201 E. 12th St., to discuss the petition drive.
The public is invited to the forum to ask questions and participate in a discussion concerning public-school funding in Colorado.
In attendance will be Sen. Bruce Whitehead, D-Hesperus, along with Beverly Ingle, president of the Colorado Education Association, as well as school superintendents and others from the area.
For more information or to arrange a time to sign the petition, contact your local school representative.
