A medical marijuana dispensary in Durango was burglarized last week, but nothing appears to have been stolen.

The burglary, at the Durango Healing Center, occurred about 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 31 at 473 E. College Drive.

According to an incident report from the Durango Police Department, the business installed a "dummy" camera that was inoperable.

But a security system was activated and notified police of the burglary.

The suspects - only one of whom is believed to have gone inside - were gone when police arrived.

"It appears as if the suspect was spooked by the alarm and was not in the building long enough to have taken anything," the police report says.

There were two sets of shoeprints in the snow outside the building.

The burglar gained entry to the business by breaking a window and crawling through it. One suspect left muddy shoeprints inside the business, which matched a set of shoeprints found outside in the snow.

A new city ordinance went into effect Nov. 2 - after the break-in - that requires all marijuana dispensaries in Durango to have an alarm system with video surveillance.

Mark Busnardo, co-owner of Durango Healing, said the business is installing a camera system that meets city requirements.

The medical marijuana at Durango Healing Center is kept in a safe behind two locked doors, Busnardo said, so "there's really no upside to breaking in."

City Manager Ron LeBlanc said the break-in illustrates a need for the new ordinance.

"It's unfortunate that there was a burglary," he said. "I think the new ordinance has some measure that will detour burglaries in the future."

In addition to requiring security systems with video surveillance, the new ordinance requires dispensaries to place the medical marijuana in secure safes while the business is closed.

People can hope...but not obtain. How dumb do you have to be to break into someplace like this? Alarms? duh. Of course they have alarms.
