What locals say

In an unscientific poll, 11 residents responded by e-mail to a question posed on The Durango Herald's Web site: “What result do you expect from the Copenhagen climate conference?" Answers, for the most part, revealed a large dose of cynicism.

  • Michelle Schwettman: “The name change from 'global warming' to 'climate change' says it all, since the weather and worldwide temperatures are not supporting their 'warming' theory. There simply is no such thing as climate control. The climate controls us, not the other way around. The climate is entirely dependent on the actions of the sun, oceans, clouds and other factors. Global warming is the biggest hoax ever."
  •  Dorothy Newell: “My opinion as to what will happen and what I hope will happen are different. At the least, I hope that some kind of beginning agreement as to how to cope with this dangerous problem will occur. What I wish is that the countries would come to some kind of mutual agreement and put some strong controls in place."
  •  Jerry Forsythe: “I believe it's another shakedown of the American people. Wealth transfer to vampire-like political systems that have failed and require sucking our blood and money to survive. The CO2 has risen, but temperatures have not followed the failed computer modeling. … Climate change is a hoax pushed on the people in an effort to gain effective control of the energy producers and bleed them and the American people dry."
  •  Joe Korinko: “Climate warms and cools. Data from the 14th century showed a definite warming trend. Why? There were no cars or factories. Maybe it was flatulating cows. Junk science used to be relegated to the soft (social) sciences until now. Cherry-picked data and out-and-out deception by East Anglia University shows this hoax for what it is - a redistribution of this country's wealth to a scandal-ridden United Nations. Remember 'Oil for Food?' Another corrupted U.N. program. Enough!"
  •  Bob Butler: “A lot of hot air!"
  •  Mike Wall: “Sadly, the U.S. will most likely sign away America's sovereignty in Copenhagen despite plenty of satellite data and evidence disproving anthropogenic global warming. It is now clear that climate data has been doctored and falsified by some of the top (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) scientists to support their agenda. But still, the religion of global warming continues using its false prophets and its puppet media (The Durango Herald included) spreading its junk science and lies blinding the masses from truth and real science."
  •  Neon Blue: “Please take the time to listen to the Lord Monckton interview live from Copenhagen at the following link: www.infowars.com."
  •  Darren Rowley: “I believe the Earth has been warming and cooling since the beginning of time. Global warming - oh, they don't use that term anymore since scientific evidence shows the Earth is now cooling, so now it's climate change. This is just a way for people like Al Gore to make money by scaring people while he lives in large houses all over the world using more fossil fuels in a year than I will in my lifetime. It seems ludicrous that man can change the weather."
  •  Merle Whittaker: “I expect nothing but hot air."
  • Steve Behney: “More government intrusion in our lives. We got the change with the president and no hope."
  •  Krista Murphy: “Environmentalism is the new socialism. Environmentalism has morphed into fascism. It's 100 percent about control. There is no room for dissent. Why aren't those on the left who hate the upper class more suspicious of the green movement? It has megabucks behind it. There are many well-respected scientists who are questioning the giant money-making movement called global warming. The conference at Copenhagen will devastate our very iffy economy."
