Durango resident Sue Wilson Elbert died at Mercy Regional Medical Center on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009. She was 83.

Mrs. Elbert was born to Guy and Margaret Wilson in Houston on July 2, 1926.

In 1956, she married Fred J. Elbert Jr. in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Mrs. Elbert earned a bachelor’s degree in science and education from Midwestern State University in 1971 at the age of 45 and a master’s of education from Midwestern in 1974.

She moved to Durango in 2003. She was an avid bridge player and had served for two years on the Durango Arts Commission.

Mrs. Elbert was preceded in death by her husband, Fred J. Elbert Jr.; and a son.

She is survived by her son Fred J. Elbert III of Durango; and two grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at the Durango Public Library. The Rev. Andrew Cooley of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church will officiate.
